They’re made of stories that we already know and love. It’s a show about Sherlock and John and all of the other characters being made of stories. Stop thinking for a minute about Sherlock as a show that is telling us only the story of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson as Arthur Conan Doyle wrote about them. I am made of that story and countless others. Sherlock gives me the words to tell my stories and that saves me in so many ways. I learned all that the good things and the bad things that go with that– how it breaks you and how it saves you. But somehow, people got through my wall, and I learned that people could love me, and that I could love other people. I was (and sometimes still am) that person on the outside, the person that holds everyone and everything and arm’s length. Have you considered what the stories we love say about us? Why do you watch Sherlock? I watch it because it is my story. Mycroft : Neither do I … but initially he wanted to be a pirate. Mycroft : My brother has the brain of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. Just make it a good one, eh? ‘Cause it was, you know. I am also asking you to participate-to tell a story that Sherlock is telling.
I’m going to state my general premise, and I’m going to provide a few small examples. This is intended to be thought provoking, and to invite you to shift your focus about how we view Sherlock as a show.
